Hello everyone!
So my name is Jillian and I started working at Cherish a few months ago. I love it here so far! Anyway, a few days ago I was handed the task of finalizing Cherish’s San Francisco Green Business Certification application. Even though I am super excited about this project (I am a huge nerd and love anything related to Excel spreadsheets. Weird, right?) this is such a monumental task in so many ways. But first, what does SF Green Certification even mean?
Becoming an SF Green Business means we meet certain eco standards that are in compliance with environmental regulations that are in effect. Basically, it means that we go to extra lengths to reduce pollution, waste, and our energy and water consumption. It also means that we take the time to educate our staff and our customers about the importance of sustainability and our own green policies.
So how does Cherish become SF Green Certified?
Well, Cherish needs to meet all requirements under each section. Sections are recycling & waste reduction, water conservation, toxics & pollution prevention, and energy conservation. There are about 4-6 standards we need to meet per section, as well as meeting a host of other standards under subheadings. Want to see what the list looks like? Check it out here!
As you can imagine, this is a HUGE undertaking for a paper crafts store. And the idea of taking over it is daunting, even though so many changes have already been made. For example, the paper companies we buy paper, like Green Paper Company, are 30% post consumer waste. And we only use soy based inks when doing custom printing. So we’re well on our way!
I’ll be updating pretty frequently on the ins and outs of greening a business…so stay tuned!
